βAll Thingsβ Presents: Dr. Derek C. Schuurman
Join us as Dr. Derek C. Schuurman shares his talk: The Story of Progress & a Path To Responsible Technology. This is part of the All Things Abraham Kuyper: βLoving Every Square Inchβ Speaker Series!
"There is a great big, beautiful tomorrow" is the theme song for Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress celebrating technological advances over the past century. Will technology move us towards this "beautiful tomorrow?" This talk will explore a perspective on engineering informed by the Biblical story and how it can guide us toward more responsible technology. Despite being written during the bronze and iron age, the Biblical narrative remains relevant with implications for today's digital age.
Derek C. Schuurman completed a Ph.D. at McMaster University in the area of robotics and computer vision. He is currently a professor of computer science at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a former adjunct associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at McMaster and is a fellow of the American Scientific Affiliation.
